Royal gardens of the past had brick walls as borders. While the brick walls kept the intruders out, the walls also contained life and beauty within that was well-watered, and well-taken care of. The walls were for safety. Similarly, the cities in which the Israelites once occupied also had borders as boundaries. When they were broken down, the people were distraught, uneasy and didn't feel safe. Currently, our culture is in need of boundaries. Just as Israel was once in ruin, the gates (places of influence) destroyed, and the borders broken down, so too, do we see the breaking down of healthy boundaries in our culture.
While there are those who live unhindered, without boundaries, there are those who are rising up to build, and protect. They live a life with healthy boundaries because of their relationship with God, and reverence of the scriptures. There are those like Nehemiah, who 1) Are in a position of influence; 2) Are a people who pray, seek God, and delight to fear His name (see Nehemiah 1:11); and 3) Know how to respond to the naysayer's.
Look and see how Nehemiah responded to the naysayers. He'd already sought God, had His favor, and the favor of King Artaxerxes. He knew the attacks had to do with receiving the portion, which was the right or claim of inheritance, including land. When Nehemiah's naysayers attacked him, he took it to the throne room of God in prayer: "Hear us, our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity" (Nehemiah 4:4).
That's a fairly intense prayer, but when people speak against you or speak insults, those words can fall on their on heads, not yours. Those who've insulted you behind your back will not be moving with you to this next level.
Nehemiah also recognized God was on his side, and that gave him confidence. He replied to the Naysayers, "The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it" ( Nehemiah 2:20).
With God on your side, it doesn’t matter who, or what, comes against you. Strengthen your hands for the good work! Seek God! You are being built up, refined and defined as a son or daughter of God. Borders and boundaries are part of the process as we awaken and live with boundaries that are for our own good, safety, and well-being.
"There is One who leads you into the garden with loving chords of kindness, that place of meeting face-to-face where you become a well-watered garden. All of creation waits eagerly for the glory of the children of God – you. This is the awakening." - The Garden Keys - V.II Awakening Daughter Zion
